Limelight Networks Delivers Viewer Created Content for Current TV
TEMPE, AZ – November 20, 2006 – Limelight Networks, the world’s leading content delivery network for digital media, announced today that it is the delivery network for www.current.tv, the popular online counterpart to the Current television network.
As the CDN for www.current.tv, Limelight delivers the unique combination of professional and viewer created video content featured on cable/satellite network Current TV. Launched in 2005 and co-founded by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, Current TV defined the programming model of viewer created content (VC2) and audience participation. Roughly one-third on the on-air content comes from VC2, and the public can even vote for its favorite videos, the best of which are broadcast on the network–a first in online and television broadcasting.
“Our users are hooked on viewing and voting. The success of an online video community is absolutely dependent on the quality of the video experience,” said Smith Forté, vice president of online for Current TV. “Limelight Networks enables us to consistently deliver high-quality video content to our community, regardless of site traffic or video size.”
“Limelight Network was designed with video-intensive, interactive online communities like Current TV in mind,” said Lou Greco, vice president of sales at Limelight Networks. “With the accelerated adoption of online creation and sharing of rich digital media, many networks will be challenged to offer consistent performance on a large scale. We are focused on meeting the demanding and increasing needs of the digital entertainment industry as it flourishes and matures.”
About Current TV
Current TV, which launched August 1, 2005, is the first national network created by, for and with an 18-34 year-old audience. The network shows young adults what’s going on in their world, in their voice. Current is also the first network in history whose programming is supplied in part by the very audience who watches it. It has developed the television industry’s leading model of “viewer created content” (VC2), which comprises roughly one-third of Current’s on-air broadcast, and allows the audience to submit short-form, nonfiction video “pods,” “viewer created ads” (V-CAMs), and mobile video. Its award-winning programming ranges from the hottest trends in technology, fashion, music and videogames, to pressing issues such as the environment, relationships, parenting, finance, politics and spirituality. Current is available in 30 million U.S. homes via Comcast (channel 107 nationwide), Time Warner Cable, and DirecTV (channel 366 nationwide).
